Docker is an open platform for developing, shipping, and running applications inside lightweight, portable containers. Containers package an application together with all its dependencies into a standardized unit, eliminating environment inconsistencies across development, staging, and production.
The Moby project is the upstream open source component that Docker Engine is built from. It provides the daemon, CLI client, container runtime, image builder, and networking subsystems used by Docker Desktop and other container platforms.
